May 10 All day
Mother’s Day in Canada is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, and in 2026, it falls on May 10th.
This day is set aside to honor and appreciate mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures for their contributions to families and society.
It’s a great time to come together for brunches, gifts, and expressions of gratitude.
History of Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day has roots dating back to ancient times with celebrations honoring motherhood.
An interesting tidbit about Mother’s Day: Anna Jarvis, an American from West Virginia, is credited with its modern form in the early 20th century. However, Anna Jarvis later petitioned to abolish the holiday.
The first official celebration in Canada took place in 1908, thanks to the efforts of local women’s groups.
In 1915, the Canadian government officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, aligning it with the American observance.
The day quickly gained popularity and made its way to Canada, where it’s now widely celebrated.
Here’s a short video about the interesting history of Mother’s Day including the Anna Jarvis story:
