Geminids Meteor Shower Peak ☄️

December 13 @ 9:00 pm December 14 @ 11:59 pm

Hey fellow stargazers, it’s that time again…

Get ready for the (hopefully) spectacular Geminids meteor shower, lighting up the skies!

For the best viewing experience, remember to circle December 13th and 14th on your calendar; these nights offer the best chance for amazing sights!

The moon will be in a waxing crescent phase, which is great for optimal meteor shower visibility!

Starting around 9pm, look toward the constellation Gemini. The peak times will be from about 10:30pm to 1:30pm

After the moon’s up, face west to keep it at your back for continued viewing.

A Bit About the Geminids

The Geminids are famous for their bright, colorful meteors. They move at a leisurely pace, so you might not spot trails, but the show is still impressive.

These meteors owe their origin to the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. With an hourly rate of 150 and a speed of 22 miles per second, they’re sure to dazzle stargazers.

Best Spots around Campbell River:

  • McIvor Lake – Far enough away from the lights for a good view!
  • Elk Falls Provincial Park – The playground park in the campsite area is my go-to. It’s got plenty of dark sky.
  • Campbell Lake – Find a spot with a view open to the northeast and you are set!
  • Rebecca Spit on Quadra Island: A short ferry ride and you’re all set with wide-open sky views.
  • Anywhere away from city lights with a clear view to the northeast works too. Keep it simple!

So, grab some blankets, warm drinks, and settle in for the show! ✨
