Campbell River gets a bit of sky theatre this month… a full moon that lines up with a lunar eclipse, so the Moon will slowly darken and shift to a coppery red.
No telescope needed… just step outside and watch the show unfold over several hours.
You don’t have to wait until the small hours of to start watching. Here on the west coast the eclipse will start at 7:56pm and peak at 9:12pm
The eclipse moves slowly, so there’s time to catch different stages of the event and some nice photo moments 📷.
If there’s mist or light rain and the Moon is low, you might even spot a moonbow, a faint rainbow created by moonlight hitting water droplets.
Waterfront spots like the seawalk or other shorelines are great places to look for reflections and any moonbow action 🌊.
Practical tips: dress warm, bring a chair or blanket, check moonrise and weather forecasts, and keep an eye on the horizon for the best colour and reflections.
If you haven’t been… Jaycee Park / Willow Point Reef is a nice place to view the moon over the ocean in Campbell River, but just about anywhere with a clear view will work.
