Elinor Frey, an American-Canadian cellist, will perform Bach’s Cello Suites at our local Rivercity Stage.
The suites, composed around 1720 while Bach was in the service of Prince Leopold in Cöthen, are renowned for their complexity and beauty.
They showcase Bach’s ability to blend the cello’s range from the low bass to the soprano, creating the illusion of multiple voices.
The main source for this performance is the manuscript copy of Anna Magdalena Bach, as no original Bach autographs survive.

About the Artist
Elinor Frey is a distinguished cellist, gambist, and researcher.
She has performed with ensembles and orchestras such as Tafelmusik, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, London Symphony, Constantinople, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.
Her recording “Early Italian Cello Concertos” won the 2023 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year.
Frey is the artistic director of Accademia de’ Dissonanti, an organization dedicated to performance and research. She has received numerous grants and prizes, including the US-Italy Fulbright Fellowship and a research residency at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent.
She teaches Baroque cello and performance practice at McGill University and the Université de Montréal. In 2021, she was awarded Québec’s Opus Prize for “Performer of the Year.”

General admission tickets are priced at $20 to be affordable for anyone who wishes to attend, or $30 for those who want to help sustain the concert series.
Teen tickets are available for $5, and children under 13 can attend for free when accompanied by a paying adult. Additional taxes and fees may apply.
