“Transformations on the Shore” is Campbell River’s unique driftwood carving competition, where local and visiting artists turn pieces of driftwood into stunning works of art.
Originating in 1997, this event celebrates both creativity and community, transforming the Sea Walk and city into a living gallery every year.
Background and History
The story of Campbell River’s beloved driftwood carving competition, “Transformations on the Shore,” begins back on Canada Day, July 1, 1996.
That day, local artist Max Chickite was hard at work on an old stump that had been on the beach for many years. After 10 hours of carving, a remarkable octopus emerged from the wood, and “Octy” was born. Octy was a gift to the city from Max, and his creation quickly became a local treasure.
However, a few days later, vandals cut off Octy’s head and stole it. The beheaded octopus caused an uproar in the community. Fortunately, the stolen head was found 11 days later on a logging road, albeit charred and damaged. Max repaired it and returned it to Octy’s body, but the incident had already made an indelible mark on the community.
The widespread upset over the vandalism inspired the idea for the Driftwood Carving Competition. If one carving could elicit such strong emotions from the city’s residents, surely a whole city filled with stunning carvings would be appreciated even more. And so, “Transformations on the Shore” began in 1997.
The Event Today
Since then, the event has captivated thousands of visitors and local residents who love watching the carvers at work and enjoy the beautiful carvings left along the Sea Walk and throughout the City of Campbell River.
This annual event happens every year in late June, drawing carvers from near and far to demonstrate their incredible talents.
