DESCRIPTION:June is a great time visit the Quinsam River Hatchery & trails along the river. \n\n\n\nIt’s a free\, fantastic way to experience the wildlife on Vancouver Island. \n\n\n\nBesides the learning about salmon\, you might also get a chance to see black bears feeding. And you’re also likely to see eagles\, ravens and kingfishers. \n\n\n\nReminder: Gates close at 3:30pm!  \n\n\n\nYou can still walk the hatchery and river around after 3:30pm\, but gates close & indoor displays are only open from 8am to 3:30pm. \n\n\n\n\n\nJust park outside the gates if you arrive near or after closing. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the hatchery here \n\n\n\nBears & Bear Safety\n\n\n\nRemember to be aware that the bears frequent the area at this time of year\, so be bear smart: \n\n\n\nBe noisy\, don’t tread softly. Be known. Speak to your hiking partner as you are walking.  \n\n\n\nAlso\, it should be obvious\, but apparently it isn’t … \n\n\n\nDon’t pet the bears!

DESCRIPTION:Biologist Sandra Milligan is leading an intertidal zone walk at Willow Point Reef\, starting out from Jaycee Park. It’s a hands-on\, eyes-down look at all the cool creatures that show up when the tide’s way out.  \n\n\n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever wanted to see what hides under the seaweed\, this walk covers everything…barnacles and periwinkles up high\, mussels and mussel shells mid-way\, and loads of bright sea stars and crabs closer to the water 🦀. \n\n\n\nSandra knows exactly where to find all the unusual stuff too\, like gumboot chitons\, green urchins\, even the occasional rainbow-hued nudibranch.  \n\n\n\nTurning over a rock might reveal a few surprises… sometimes you even spot a daisy brittle star\, which is always a hit\, especially with kids.
